First in-house dissertation council meeting awarded degrees

April 15th, 2019 Larisa Busil, Yury Nurmeev

The inaugural convention of the new academic body occurred on 12th April.
In 2018, Kazan Federal University became one of the institutions authorized to award its own academic degrees without further approval by the Higher Attestation Commission. This is a major change in the national degree system.
The honor to hold the first thesis defense was bestowed on the zoology and biological resource council. It comprises eleven academics and can award both Candidate of Science (equivalent of PhD) and Doctor of Science degrees.
Two dissertations were presented – by Yekaterina Shafigullina (Ultrastructural specifics of gametal cells and gametogenesis of Acoela and Plathelminthes: phylogenetic aspect) and Rahman Midjanoor (Ecological adaptation of Varanidae in the changing environment and their protection in tropical ecosystems). Notably, Mr. Midjanoor, who is a Bangladeshi national, was given the opportunity to present in English, but he chose the tougher challenge and spoke Russian.
Both defendants were deemed worthy of the Candidate of Science degree, and the decision now goes to the internal attestation commission.
